Olivet MI, January 07, 2010 – FixLogix LLC has developed a new concept for rapid semi-dedicated part-holding fixtures for CMM inspection. FixLogix utilizes their modular fixture system to build CMM holding fixtures in days instead of weeks. This streamlines part verification and reduces cycle times for new product development. Tremendous cost savings are achieved as well. A typical fixture for a part smaller than a 12” cube costs less than $500. For part volumes less than 24” the fixtures are generally less than $1000.
The cost advantage is achieved by utilizing the advanced FixLogix fixture system. The system features a new fabricated T-slot fixture plate and components that can be produced at a fraction of the cost of traditional tooling plates. The plate and integrated components significantly reduce the cost and time to build a CMM fixture. Since the plate and components are modular, they can be recycled and integrated into new fixtures if the original becomes obsolete. This further increases savings over time compared to traditional dedicated custom fixtures.
The fixtures can be developed utilizing CAD data, however it is even faster and more reliable simply to ship a part directly to the FixLogix plant as well. Then a fixture is built to the part, and optimized to avoid interference with part features of interest. The t-slot system has infinite adjustability in multiple directions. This simplifies positioning of locating components while avoiding interference points. The fixtures work well for a wide variety of part types and materials. Plastics, machined parts, castings, stampings, and tubular assemblies are easily staged with the fixtures.
Designed initially for CMMs, the system is being utilized in a variety of coordinate metrology applications. Users of portable coordinate inspection systems such as articulating arms have found the fixture system to be very useful, and the economical price point is appropriate for the application. Other customers have used the system for staging parts on CT scanners, and for holding parts on laser engraving systems. A USA subsidiary of a large Japanese automotive manufacturer recently made a second purchase of multiple fixtures using FixLogix products.
